School Kits
Education is important for every community, especially where poverty or disaster has limited the options for young people to reach their potential. School kits contain essentual supplies to help children – and in some cases, adults – continue learning, in spite of the hardships they face. That learning leads to a better life for them, their families, and their communities.
Our Ministry
In the 12 months ended September 30, 2014, the people of St. John's collected, assembled, and shipped 341 school kits to the LWR warehouse in New Windsor, Maryland.
Getting Involved
School kits are collected in August of each year. Most families of the congregation provide the supplies for one or more school kits.
Each school kit should contain:
- Four 70-sheet notebooks (280 to 300 sheets total) of wide- or college-ruled paper, approximately 8" x 10-1/2"; no loose-leaf paper, please
- One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
- One pencil sharpener
- One pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
- Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers, secured together with a rubber band
- Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink), secured together with a rubber band
- One box of 16 or 24 crayons
- One 2-1/2" eraser
- One sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag, approximately 14" x 17" with shoulder straps. Recommended fabrics are sturdy cotton, canvas, denim, and twill. No standard backpacks, please.
